Oscar and the Wolf searches for his post-breakup self on synth pop stunner 'Somebody Without U'
Dancefloor melancholy at its finest
Friday, May 31, 2024 – Rediscovering yourself post-breakup can be quite a messy process. Who the hell are you again, and how much has changed in the meantime? Oscar and the Wolf’s Max Colombie crystallizes this familiar malaise through his catchy new single 'Somebody Without U'.
Listen to Oscar and the Wolf - Somebody Without U right here.
"It's getting so much harder lately/To move on to something new", Colombie croons over the song’s new wave-inspired synth melodies. ‘Somebody Without U’ is dancefloor melancholy at its finest: tidal waves of serotonin-charged euphoria rushing against the rocky shores of loneliness.
“‘Somebody Without U’ came to me very quickly and naturally,” Colombie comments. “I had first written the song on the piano; it was a real ballad in the beginning. One of my producers put the song under a pop beat. And I figured that's actually better, because this created a powerful contrast; the upbeat arrangement mixed with the sad lyrics. That's kind of what The Smiths do as well.”
The song follows 'Angel Face', which has amassed over 5 million streams worldwide since its release. It kickstarted a new artistic phase for Oscar and the Wolf, one that promises a more vulnerable, candid side of Colombie. 'Somebody Without U' and 'Angel Face' offer a taste of Oscar and the Wolf’s new sonic direction. Colombie’s well-honed balance between dark and light – with a unique blend of club music, cutting-edge pop and hot-blooded R&B – is once again a fundamental force: except this time around, the scars and imperfections are on full display.
Both in the media and via personal channels, Colombie has pulled no punches in showing some of the darkest past chapters of his life – using his platform to raise public awareness on mental health and substance abuse. “I used to see myself as a character in scenarios that didn't really exist. Now, my work is all really autobiographical. I don't want to become the face of mental illness, but I do want to be a voice of awareness.”

About Oscar and the Wolf
As the creative entity behind Oscar and the Wolf, Max Colombie prowls somewhere in-between the familiar emotions. It made the Belgian artist a true rarity amongst other arena-selling peers: a magnetic performer who can somehow embody his most vulnerable and grandiose self within a single moment.
Colombie has maintained Oscar and the Wolf’s well-honed balance between dark and light – within his unique blend of club music, cutting-edge pop and hot-blooded R&B. After signing with Sony, Oscar and the Wolf enters a new phase, one where Colombie fearlessly courts the imperfections of the person beneath the spectacle, taking his craft into more autobiographical directions.
New single 'Angel Face' marks the first taste of a new, more vulnerable Oscar and the Wolf. “Every song is a story about a certain forbidden consumption or a drug. Sometimes beautiful and sweet, sometimes dark and bitter.”
